Alberta Association of Registered Nurses Museum & Archives Anyone who has an interest in the field of nursing will find this museum fascinating. The displays and historical information cover the development of the nursing profession as well as the founding of the Alberta Association of Registered Nurses in Alberta.

Notebooks, pins, documents, and medals from both World Wars are on display. The prime exhibit is a Florence Nightingale Lamp, one of only three in existence. More »

Alberta Aviation Museum

Alberta Aviation Museum Among the lovingly restored aircraft on display at this museum are a Fairchild 71C, a McDonnell CF-101B, and a de Havilland Mk.B35 Mosquito. There are other aircraft and more restoration projects in progress.

You can browse displays of photos, models, artifacts, and aero engines. If you are into research, there are archives and a library. Guided tours of the museum can be arranged given prior notice. You will find the museum in the Prince Rubert district, near the City Centre Airport. More »

Alberta Legislature Building Interpretive Centre & Gift Shop Surrounded by parks and commanding a fine view of the river, the Legislature Building was opened in 1912. Its architecture is beaux-arts style, reflecting Alberta's confidence in the future.

Educational videos and various events take place during the year. Gifts, souvenirs, and local crafts may be purchased at the centre's gift shop. Alberta Railway Museum This train-lover's museum is out on the northeastern limits of the city, near Fort Road. However, if the golden age of steam is for you, it is well worth the visit.

See a restored railway station, bunk house, water tower, and fire hall. There is a working steam train that you can ride on, and another is in the process of being restored along with numerous carriages, cars, and railway artifacts. Blackhawk Golf Club

Blackhawk Golf Club Situated about 10 minutes west of Edmonton in the North Saskatchewan River Valley and only open since 2003, this popular golf course offers smallish greens with unique and bold contouring. Designed by Rod Whitman, who also designed the Wolf Creek Golf Resort, the course runs along the banks of the North Saskatchewan River. Sometimes boats chugging on the river and wildlife splashing in the shallows can make concentrating on your swing a challenge, but it all adds to the charm of the course, which is rapidly becoming a favorite with golfers for its challenging layout and natural design. Calgary & Edmonton (1891) Railway Museum During July and August, and by appointment in the winter, you can travel back in time to see what Old Strathcona's railway station was really like.

The station was used until 1907, when a new one was built. The museum is home to a working telegraph service, which was the main method of communication in the early days. More »

Castrol Raceway

Castrol Raceway Some of Canada's fastest dragsters perform here at speeds up to 200 miles per hour. Drag racing and oval track race meetings are held weekends and evenings, mostly during the summer. The oval track race meetings include sprint cars, stock cars, and econo-stock car racing. The gates open approximately two hours before the events start. Admission prices vary depending on the event. Chinatown

Chinatown An ornate red gateway spanning 75 feet across 102nd Avenue at 97th Street welcomes visitors to where Edmonton's Chinatown used to be. Due to the construction of government buildings and the LRT, Chinatown has since moved east to 95th Street, between 102nd and Jasper Avenues. But the gate is still worth checking out before heading east to find a good Chinese restaurant or check out the local markets. Built by a Chinese master architect, the gateway has eight steel columns and 11,000 ornamental tiles. The gate was built as a symbol of friendship between Edmonton and its sister city, Harbin, China. Citadel Theatre

Citadel Theatre Located in the heart of downtown, the Citadel Theatre is hard to miss; it is a shining building of glass with a striking central block. There are five theatres within: the Shoctor (685 seats), the semicircular Maclab (686 seats), and the "black box" Rice (200 seats), where you will find everything from contemporary plays to classical Shakespeare. There is also the Metro Cinema (in the Zeidler Hall), Tucker Amphitheatre, Lee Pavilion, Foote Theatre School, Kidsplay children's theatre and three multi-function rooms available for rental. More »

City of Edmonton Archives As well as housing current and past government records, this centre holds a large collection of historical photographs, a variety of manuscripts, and documents donated by organizations that have contributed to the social history of the city.

Commonwealth Stadium

Commonwealth Stadium The Commonwealth Stadium is located just to the northeast of downtown Edmonton; it is hard to miss the biggest stadium in Canada. It was built for the 1978 Commonwealth Games, which Edmonton hosted. Now, the natural grass surface is home to the Edmonton Eskimos Football Team, the Canadian National Soccer Team, and host to major concerts throughout the year; seating capacity exceeds 60,000. Dentistry Museum Collection This University museum has been housed in the old campus medical building since 1912. Students can receive walk-in dental treatment at this museum/dental office. Devonian Botanic Garden

Devonian Botanic Garden These lush grounds include 80 acres of formal gardens and 110 acres of open area. It also serves as a serious research and education centre for the faculty of agriculture, forestry, and home economics. Courses for the public are run year round on arts, crafts, and horticulture; there are day camps for school children during the summer months.

There are 10 separate themed gardens, as well as a butterfly collection. For gifts and souvenirs, check out the on-site shop. More »

Eagle Rock Golf Course

Eagle Rock Golf Course Played over 6,172 yards and set at a par-71, Eagle Rock is a moderately challenging course. Ten of its holes involve water, and all have bunkers.

Edmonton BMX-treme

Edmonton BMX-treme It doesn't matter how old you are; you can learn BMX track racing here. During race nights, as long as you have the right safety gear, beginners can race free. The track is located southwest and over the river from Edmonton's downtown district near the Bonnie Doon Shopping Centre. Training takes place right after Monday's race night; there is a limited amount of loan bikes and safety equipment available, or you can bring your own. More »

Edmonton Public Schools Archives & Museum

Edmonton Public Schools Archives & Museum Not too far away from Alberta's current legislature building is the original one, now restored and housing Edmonton's Public Schools Records from 1884. You will find old textbooks, report cards, photographs, yearbooks, trophies, restored classrooms, and many other items of interest. See old school uniforms, sports jerseys, and old schoolhouse furniture.

Researchers and people with any interest in education history will find a visit here fascinating. There is free onsite parking. The museum also runs educational programs for schoolchildren. More »

Elk Island National Park

Elk Island National Park Elk Island National Park is 75 square miles of fenced-in forest located about 32 kilometres east of Edmonton. Established in 1906 to protect dwindling wildlife stocks, it is now a prime attraction with a fine herd of bison as well as elk, wapiti, deer, beaver, and coyotes. Although it is one of Canada's smallest national parks, there are all the opportunities for camping, hiking, fishing, and guided tours that you would expect. Check website for further details. Fort Edmonton Park Explore Edmonton's beginnings as a fur trading post at Canada's largest living museum. Fort Saskatchewan Museum and Historic Site

Fort Saskatchewan Museum and Historic Site The North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) established a fort on the south side of the North Saskatchewan River in 1875. When it was transferred to Edmonton in 1913, however, the old fort was destroyed, and a jail and courthouse went up in its stead. The jail was demolished in 1994, but you can still check out the historic courthouse, which now houses a museum detailing the history of the NWMP. While not original to the site, other historic buildings have been moved there as well, including a blacksmith shop, a schoolhouse, and a restored log homestead, giving visitors a taste of what life was like for early Canadian settlers. Galaxyland One of many superlatives at the West Edmonton Mall, Galaxyland is currently the world's largest indoor amusement park. The mascot is the inevitable man in a suit, named Cosmo, and is a big hit with the little ones. There are 25 rides to choose from, including Mindbender, Autosled, and Drop of Doom. Golfdome Whether you need to brush up on your driving, putting, or bunker game, facilities at the Golfdome allow you to practice inside, whatever the weather. There are 52 driving stalls, a putting green, virtual golf, miniature golf, and a practice sand trap. Apart from the golfdome, there is a licensed restaurant and banquet hall. Goose Hummock Golf Resort Goose Hummock's 18-hole par-71 golf challenging course plays over 6,700 yards of ponds, trees, layered greens and wildlife. Gibbons is a 30-minute drive north of Edmonton.

There is equipment for rent, a pro-shop, lessons, full catering in the clubhouse and coffee shop, banqueting facilities, a driving range, and a practice green. This course has a typical golf course dress code. More »

Government House

Government House This three-story Jacobean Revivalist building served as the home of Alberta's first six lieutenant governors. The grand sandstone edifice, which features high gabled roofs, bay windows, and rectangular windows grouped closely together, was designed by R.P. Blakey and officially opened in 1913. The house was soon vacated and closed in 1938, however, and remained so for a few years until WWII, when it was turned into a convalescent home for wounded veterans. In the 1970s, the house was extensively restored back to its original splendor, and it is now used to host high-level government receptions and conferences, although the general public is welcome to visit as well. Hermitage Park

Hermitage Park Hermitage Park is located in the northeastern section of the city, near the Yellowhead Trail.

It is part of Edmonton's group of river valley parks, which form the largest area of parkland in North America today. The park is a mixture of trees and open grassland as it follows the line of the river.

There is a pond stocked with trout if you fancy some fishing, as well as numerous trails for hikers and bikers. The trails transform for skiing and snowshoe jaunts in the wintertime. More »

High Level Bridge

High Level Bridge If you hit this bridge on a special day, you may be lucky enough to see the Great Divide Waterfall in operation and marvel at the curtain of water higher than Niagara Falls spilling along the length of the bridge into the North Saskatchewan River below. But even if the waterfall is off, the bridge is worth a visit on its own. Built in 1913, the structure linked the new capital to Strathacona. It has since been used as a roadway, a railway, a walkway, and a tramway. In 2000, a local historical society started running a streetcar across the bridge, which you can ride from the Grandin Light Rail Transit Station to as far south as Old Strathacona. More »

High Level Streetcar

High Level Streetcar Streetcars restored by the Edmonton Radial Railway Society operate along a stretch of line between Jasper Avenue and Old Strathcona. The 20-minute trip includes a crossing of the High Level Bridge and a running commentary on passing attractions, such as the historic C&E Railway Station Museum. Trains depart up to six times daily May through September, allowing visitors to alight in Old Strathcona and spend time exploring the historic precinct before returning to downtown. The roundtrip cost is inexpensive for adults and families alike. More »

Ice Palace

Ice Palace The Edmonton Oilers can sometimes be seen here holding practices on the National Hockey League-sized ice rink. When it is public skate time, the lively music and glistening lights reflecting off the ice create a fun atmosphere.

Many other hockey teams also practice and play here. The rink offers skating programs for beginners. Because of the frequency of events like figure skating that are hosted here, public skating times are prone to rescheduling at short notice, so check ahead. More »

Jägare Ridge Golf Club

Jägare Ridge Golf Club Located within Edmonton's southern city limits on Ellerslie Road, Jagare Ridge Golf Club has only been open since 2002. The course winds along the banks of Whitemud Creek and is populated by mature spruce, birch, poplar, and cottonwood trees, giving it a feeling of seclusion despite the club's urban location. The course is par 72, with 87 tees and 73 bunkers. More »

John Janzen Nature Centre

John Janzen Nature Centre A pond, nature trails, and colonies of friendly squirrels are just a small part of this nature centre.

It is a fun place for the children, with regular scheduled events and programs to help them understand the nature and wildlife. Dirt cake making is a highlight; now there is a skill to learn.

The centre is next to Fort Edmonton Park. There are about four kilometres of nature trails to explore on your own. However, staff is on hand to answer your questions. More »

John Walter Museum

John Walter Museum Explore the homes of John Walter, one of Edmonton's early settlers and industrialists. The houses, dating from 1875, 1884, and 1901, are open to the public Sunday afternoons. School programs, workshops, pioneer birthday parties, and activities are regular features during the week. One of the houses contains a history of John Walters in pictorial form; the other two are furnished and decorated in the style of the period. More »

Kinsmen Park

Kinsmen Park Located along the south bank of the Saskatchewan River just off Walterdale Road, this park is part of Edmonton's group of river valley parks, which form the largest area of parkland in North America today.

There is plenty to occupy visitors, including picnic sites, tennis courts, a sports field, and pitch and putt golf course. Check out the two kilometres of hiking trails that are used for cross-country skiing in the wintertime. Washrooms and changing facilities are available. More »

Kinsmen Sports Centre

Kinsmen Sports Centre There is no shortage of activity choices at this center. Located near the University of Alberta, it is thought to be one of best sports facilities in North America. There are five swimming pools including a 50-metre competition pool, a well-equipped fitness centre, badminton courts, tennis courts, racquetball courts, two running tracks, volleyball courts, and saunas. A standard admission ticket will allow you to use most of the facilities, including the pools. More »

Laboratory for Vertebrate Paleontology

Laboratory for Vertebrate Paleontology The Geology department of the University of Alberta began this collection in 1920. The famous dinosaur hunter, George Sternberg, collected some of the fossils.

Fossil reptiles, fish, birds and animals are all on display. In all, some 44,000 specimens are cataloged. Aside from its museum duties, the laboratory prepares specimens and carries out ongoing research.

This is a must see if you have any interest in archeology, fossils, and natural history. More »

Latitude 53 Gallery Latitude 53 is run by artists for artists and has strong links with the local gay community.

Its prime function is to bring local contemporary artists to the fore while providing a Mecca for the exchange of ideas. Many fine works are on display, as well as art-related publications. Lois Hole Centennial Provincial Park

Lois Hole Centennial Provincial Park Containing the former Big Lake Natural Area, these 1,421 hectacres of land northwest of Edmonton were established as Alberta's 69th provincial park on April 19, 2005. Freshwater wetland surrounded by woodlands characterizes the landscape, which serves as a safe haven to diverse wildlife and more than 220 species of birds. A wildlife viewing platform situated at the mouth of the Sturgeon River on the eastern shore of Big Lake makes enjoying the lush park accessible to everyone. The park was named after Lois Hole, a former lieutenant governor of Alberta and gardening guru. More »

MacEwan Centre for Sport & Wellness

MacEwan Centre for Sport & Wellness Located off 104th Avenue, just a few blocks from the hub of downtown Edmonton, MacEwan College's indoor sports facilities are open to the public. For a modest drop-in fee, you will have access to the swimming pool, gym, squash, and racquetball courts, as well as to supervised fitness education. During the peak hours of noon-1pm and 4:30pm-7pm, visitors to the gym are asked to pay a higher fee. Cash only; credit cards are not accepted. More »

Mill Creek Ravine Park The Mill Creek Ravine Park is a well-known place for hikers, with its selection of chipped and paved trails.

The park is mostly wooded and is located just across the river from Edmonton's downtown district. Like all the valley parks, you will find plenty of barbecue facilities. You can cool off during the summer in the park's outdoor swimming pool.

Mill Woods Recreation Centre The Mill Woods Recreation Centre is a municipal sports centre southwest of downtown, near the city limits. It boasts a wave action swimming pool, a new 5,500-square-foot fitness centre, badminton courts, tennis courts, racquetball courts, two ice rinks, volleyball, saunas, and a children's indoor playground. Mineralogy/Petrology Museum

Mineralogy/Petrology Museum The University of Alberta's collection of geological specimens is unlike any other; there are over 20,000 varieties of rocks and minerals. The collection has been assembled during the last 80 years and is available for the scrutiny of researchers and visitors.

Researchers use these specimens for studying plate tectonics and as samples to be used in university courses. Over 40 schools a year visit this museum on organized trips; guided tours can be arranged by prior appointment. More »

Muttart Conservatory Like Fort Edmonton Park, the Muttart Conservatory is operated by the city and is a top city attraction. Over 700 varieties of plants from three very different climates are on display: arid, temperate, and tropical species. Seasonal displays are presented in the show pavilion, and school visits are actively encouraged. Facilities can be rented for special events, business conferences and weddings. Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium Opened in 1955 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of Alberta, this 2,750-seat auditorium continues to host top-quality stars, events, and royalty. It is located next to the University of Alberta, just across the river from downtown Edmonton. It is hard to miss, since it is located on a 13-acre site and includes 4,000,000 square feet of entertainment, reception, and conference space. Old Strathcona

Old Strathcona In the early 1890s, the Calgary and Edmonton Railway Company completed a rail line between the province's two largest cities. Rather than invest a fair amount more and build a bridge across the North Saskatchewan River to bring the train directly into Edmonton, however, they decided to end the line on the south bank. And so Strathacona was born. Due to an early fire prevention bylaw, the buildings were mostly made of brick, thus insuring Old Strathacona's distinction today as Edmonton's most well-preserved historical district. The neighborhood has also been refurbished with period sidewalks and lampposts to enhance its former old world charm. The streets are pleasant enough to wander randomly in, but for those who want a little more, brochures offering self-guided tours are available. More »

Paleontology Museum The Paleontology Museum ranks as the number one attraction for school parties. It is not surprising, given the wide range of incredible dinosaur fossils and mega bones on display. Dinosaurs are fascinating for the young and the young at heart.

The most complete pachycephalosaur dinosaur skeleton found to date is on display. Many of the fossils displayed come from Alberta and other parts of Western Canada, while the rest hail from around the world. More »

Princess Theatre Edmonton's premiere repertory theatre shows a wide variety of releases on two large screens, and is available for private bookings and functions.
